Csoma Mansion

Orbai chair Ghelinta Nr. 211, Ghelința, Jud. Covasna

The Csoma mansion is located in a picturesque setting, in Gelencé in Tříszék, which looks back on a rich past, on the ancient land of the Csoma family, as evidenced by several letters confirming ownership and surviving manuscripts from the 1500s.

The current mansion was built in the early 1900s by Gézáné Csoma and Ilka Bodor. At that time, there was also another, older manor house on the ancient plot, which was demolished after the construction of the current manor house, and opposite the new building there was also a Csoma manor house, the condition of which deteriorated during communism and was demolished in the nineties, but both manors and the outbuildings of that time can still be seen on old military maps.

The buildings and the ancient plot were surrounded by the forests that were still owned by the family at the time, including the woodlands located at the "Csomák Uttyja" in the Great Forest, on the right is the "Csomahegye" (now called Nádika/Ladika), at the bottom of which is the ancient family estate of Csomák his grave, from the left is the Csere forest with the Saladár cemetery, where the grave of Ferenc Kádár (grandfather of Ilka Csoma) is the oldest. The farmlands and fields extended to "Imetsfalva" and "Sárfalwa" - we can read in the Books of the Kings of Transylvania (1569–1602).

Starting from the First World War, due to the pressure of various social systems, as well as the bureaucracy and other obstacles that continue to this day, several generations of the family were dragged, disabled and lost a significant part of their wealth during these more than one hundred years.

The Csoma mansion was built in a classicist style, with a unique semicircular tympanum and main entrance with columns. Its interior spaces bear the angular, classic style features of the time. There is a vaulted cellar under the building. Its roof structure was originally built with a double covering, but this was destroyed by a storm, so it was rebuilt.

The house is surrounded by a spacious yard with outbuildings and an ornamental garden. The estate is surrounded by a stone fence that has been preserved in its original location and has undergone several repairs, with stone gateposts at the entrance decorated with plaster, which could have been built around the 17th century or even older. Close to the main entrance, there is also a hundreds-year-old granary built of brick and stone. The exact date of construction is unknown.

For centuries, the Csomás helped the local community and ensured a living for the locals according to the system of the time: by working huge forests and farmlands, by operating water mills, sawmills, glass and paper factories, brandy stills. They donated significant amounts to the church in several ways, for the construction and renovation of churches, and a football pitch was created for the locals. The village school also stands on one of the Csoma lands.

At the entrance to the village, on the plot of land called Kápolna, there was once a chapel built and cared for by Zsigmond Csoma, which collapsed at the end of the 1800s, and then its ruins disappeared.

The Csoma family belonged to the primor families of Székely, it is related to many ancient, noble families, such as the Barabás, Bodor, Bánffy, Báthory, Béldy, Dombi, Gaál, Jancsó, János, Kádár, Kónya, Nagy, etc., but among others the an English royal family branch is also connected to their family tree. A sideline descendant of the linguist Csoma Sándor Kőrösi. The coat of arms of the family can be seen on the coffered ceiling of the 14th-century Roman Catholic fortress church of St. Imre in Gelence, protected by UNESCO, as well as on the gallery and baroque paintings.

Thanks to the surviving documents of historical importance, the history of the family is currently being processed, and summaries about it are continuously available on the manor's own website (www.csomakuria.com).

The Csoma mansion is currently owned by the family's descendants, and is being renovated on its own. Its goal in the near future is to host a number of cultural events that nurture and preserve the history of the family as well as the historical characteristics of the neighborhood and the Székely region, thereby contributing to the touristic value of Gelence and Székelyföld.
